Pottery Studio Shelves

Most pottery goes through the kiln twice. The first firing turns raw clay into bisque, hard but still porous. Then the potter adds glaze, which melts into a thin coat of glass in the second firing. A studio's wooden shelves full of finished and unfinished work give a pottery jigsaw puzzle plenty of round shapes. Glazes often look dull and chalky going into the kiln, so the real colors stay a surprise until the door opens.
