Autumn Jigsaw Puzzles

Fall is the best season for a jigsaw puzzle if you ask us, because every picture comes in red, orange and gold. We picked 30 autumn scenes for this page, from a steam train crossing a valley of yellow trees to pumpkins on a farm stand. You can play any of them free, at 4 to 1000 pieces, without installing anything.

What's in the fall collection

Some of these are wide views and some are close-ups. Roughly, they fall into four groups:

Why do autumn puzzles feel harder than they look?

Because half the board is the same three colors. Red, orange and gold leaves look alike once they are cut into pieces, so sorting by color stops working after the first few minutes. Sort by texture instead. Leaves on a branch have sky showing through them. Leaves on the ground sit on soil or stone. Leaves on water carry a reflection. Autumn Maple Stairway is a nice one to practice on, since the stone steps cut the red canopy into clear bands.

Which piece count should I pick?

For a first go, 100 to 150 pieces is a comfortable middle. Big landmarks like a barn, a bridge or a dog are still large enough to recognize, and the leaves have not turned into a wall of orange yet. Move up to 300 or more once you know the picture. Sunlit Forest at 1000 pieces is about as tough as this set gets, with tall trunks, a narrow path and a lot of gold light.

Going by finished games on Jigsaway, most people take around 20 minutes over a 104-piece puzzle and about two hours over a 300. Autumn scenes usually land at the slow end of that because of the leaves. Nothing has to be done in one sitting, though. Jigsaway remembers where you left off, so a half-built forest can wait until tomorrow.

Fall puzzles for kids

Choose a picture with one clear subject. The dogs work well, and so do Pumpkins on the Porch and the red tractor. At 24 or 36 pieces a younger child can find the tractor wheels or the dog's face first and build out from there. Let them choose the picture themselves. Kids stick with a puzzle much longer when it's their dog or their tractor.

Halloween is close and has its own page. After that come the Thanksgiving puzzles, with pies, a turkey dinner and that cranberry harvest.
