Which unicorn puzzle is easiest for a 5-year-old?

Unicorn Tea Party is the easiest place for a 5-year-old to begin. The unicorn, the tea table and the cupcakes are separate cheerful shapes, and there is no writing anywhere in the picture. At 8 or 12 pieces each of those shapes fills a piece or two, so there is always something to recognize.

Baby Unicorn in Flowers makes a good second puzzle. Sit with your child, find the face and horn together, then sort the petals into pink, yellow and lavender piles.

What should kids sort first?

Have them pull out the unicorn first, then the small bright things around it. A pale unicorn shows up well against most of these backgrounds, and the mushrooms, butterflies, shells or stars make a second easy group before anyone has to think about the sky.

Here is roughly who each picture suits:

Why is the snowy unicorn so hard?

Snowy Unicorn is hard because the animal and the trees share the same pale colors, so the unicorn never stands apart the way it does in the other pictures. The small lanterns and dark branches are the pieces to find first. They give you fixed points in a scene that is mostly white and soft blue.

Do the mane and legs next, then the snow shadows around them, and keep the softest flakes for the very end. A 10-year-old who finds the rest too quick will get a proper workout from it at 104 or 150 pieces.

When do the sky and clouds go in?

Leave the sky until last in nearly every unicorn picture. In Unicorns in the Clouds the sunset shifts color slowly across the top, and the pink and lilac cloud bands underneath look alike until both unicorns, with their own manes and legs, are in place.

The shore picture works the same way. Build the sand with its shells and wave edges, then follow the horizon. The rainbow waterfall is kinder, since the falling water and the rainbow run down the middle and you can work outward from the edge of the pool.

How many pieces suit each age?

For a 4 or 5-year-old, start somewhere between 4 and 12 pieces and let them ask for more. Children of about 6 or 7 tend to enjoy 24 to 50, and confident 9-year-olds can manage 104, which takes most people about 20 minutes. Nobody needs to move up on a schedule.

If your child collects rainbows too, there are more on the rainbow puzzles page, and plenty of other bright, simple pictures among the puzzles for kids.
