Halloween Jigsaw Puzzles

These are our Halloween puzzles: carved pumpkins on a porch, a black cat watching the moon, a costume shop lit up after dark. They lean cozy rather than scary, so they suit a family table as much as a late night on your own. All of them are free to play in your browser at any size from 4 to 1000 pieces.

Which Halloween puzzle should I start with?

For a quick win, open Jack-o'-Lanterns on Porch Steps. The carved faces glow orange against dark wood, so the first groups come together fast, and the stone steps give you clean straight lines to follow. Candy Bowl with Paper Bats is much the same. The bowl and the pumpkins beside it sort easily and only the wooden table asks for patience.

If you want something slower, try Foggy Graveyard with Stone Angels or Spooky Forest Path with Lanterns. Most of each picture is mist, bark and fallen leaves in close browns and grays, with a few lanterns as the only real landmarks. That is the kind of board where a higher piece count is worth the extra time.

How many pieces for a Halloween night?

A rough guide. You can change the count on any puzzle before you start.

Tips for dark pictures

Night scenes are slow going. A lot of the pieces will be some shade of navy or black, and it is easy to lose time trying them in the wrong spot. Sort by what is in the piece rather than its color: moonlight, a window glow, a twig, a wisp of fog. In Owl on a Gnarled Branch under the Moon the owl and the moon go together in minutes, but the sky around them is one soft fade, so build it out from the branch instead of from the corners.

When the dark pieces start to blur together, open View Photo and zoom in. Light up edges helps too. It puts a soft glow around the border pieces, so you can finish the frame first without hunting for straight sides.

Can we do one together?

Yes. Sign in, create a room on the Rooms page, pick the puzzle and send the invite link to a friend or a cousin who lives far away. Everyone with the link works on the same board at once, so one person can take the porch while another does the sky. Decorated Halloween Street at Dusk is a good pick for a group, with enough houses for everyone to claim one.

If you'd like orange without the spooky part, the autumn puzzles have covered bridges, maple stairways and more pumpkin scenes like Pumpkins on the Porch. In November the Thanksgiving puzzles take over with pies, a harvest table and a cranberry bog.
