Lower Berth in an Overnight Train

On the old Pullman sleeping cars, a lower berth cost more than the upper one above it. It came with the window and no ladder to climb in the dark. This one has been slept in and left rumpled, a reading lamp still on over the pillow while green fields blur past the glass. A packed bag by the fold-down table gives the sleeper train jigsaw puzzle the feel of a morning just before arrival.
