Machu Picchu in the Clouds

The Inca built Machu Picchu in the 1400s on a ridge between two mountains. The best walls were cut so precisely that the stones fit together without mortar. The ruins sit among green terraces while morning clouds drift through the valleys, the classic Machu Picchu jigsaw puzzle view. Those terraces did more than grow food, since layers of gravel underneath drained the heavy rains and kept the hillside from sliding.
