About the Umbrellas and Walking Sticks in a Tiled Hallway Stand jigsaw puzzle
Until the 1850s most umbrella ribs were made of whalebone, which was heavy and could snap. In 1852 Samuel Fox, a wire maker in Yorkshire, brought out his Paragon frame with ribs of light U-shaped steel. Whalebone soon disappeared from umbrellas. Here a brass stand crammed with plaid umbrellas and carved walking sticks waits in a Victorian hallway, a wet umbrella leaning on the wall beside it. The tiled floor gives this umbrella stand jigsaw puzzle a rainy-day look.
