About the Weathered Red Fire Hydrant beside a Brick Wall jigsaw puzzle
In plenty of American cities a fire hydrant is still called a fireplug. The name goes back to the days of wooden water mains. Firefighters would dig down to the pipe and bore a hole to get at the water, then hammer a wooden plug into it once the fire was out. A cast iron one stands on a cracked sidewalk against a dark brick wall in the fire hydrant jigsaw puzzle, its red paint chipped back to rust. Weeds have found every gap around its base.
