Iron Fire Escapes on a Brick Apartment Block

Before air conditioning, city families often carried mattresses out onto the fire escape to sleep through hot summer nights. These black iron ones zigzag down the face of an old red brick apartment building, landing after landing between the sash windows. The stair rails and floor grates make a fire escape jigsaw puzzle full of fine dark lines. Somebody up there has left the blinds half open.
