The whole top half of an excavator, cab, engine and arm together, sits on a turntable that can swing in a full circle while the tracks stay put. Many small ones are built with zero tail swing, meaning the back end never sticks out past the tracks as it turns. That lets them dig right up against a wall or a fence. In the mini excavator jigsaw puzzle, a yellow machine has been cutting a trench beside an old stone cottage, its bucket resting in a heap of wet earth. Mud covers nearly everything, tracks included.
