About the Brownstones in the West Village jigsaw puzzle
New Yorkers got the word stoop from the Dutch, whose stoep was a raised front step. On a brownstone the stoop climbs a full flight to the parlor floor, keeping the best rooms above the mud and horse manure of the old streets. Much of the soft brown sandstone itself came from quarries in Portland, Connecticut. Leafy shade falls across the sidewalk of a quiet West Village row in this brownstone jigsaw puzzle. On summer evenings those steps still serve as front porches.
