Climbing Gear on a Granite Ledge

Blue and orange ropes are coiled across the granite ledge, with closed carabiners resting in their loops. A pair of worn climbing shoes and a grey chalk bag sit nearby, their fabric and rubber surfaces breaking up the stone. Beyond the gear, a blue alpine lake and layered peaks fill the distance.

Start with the ropes and metal curves, then separate the shoes by their dark soles and bright panels. The granite has its own pattern of pale flecks, cracks and warm brown patches, so nearby pieces rarely look identical. Snowy ridges, green slopes and the calm strip of water give the upper half a clear order after the foreground kit is in place.
