Echidna Foraging beneath a Fallen Branch

Echidnas and the platypus are the only mammals alive today that lay eggs. A female echidna lays a single soft egg straight into a pouch on her belly. The baby that hatches is called a puggle. This one is foraging with its long snout pushed into dry eucalyptus leaves next to a fallen branch, in an echidna jigsaw puzzle full of pale spines and brown leaf litter.
