Espalier Pear Trees on a Brick Wall

Pear branches run in careful horizontal lines across an old brick wall. The main trunk rises near the center, with smaller branches tied down by pieces of garden twine. Pale green pears hang at different heights, some round and full, others still small under the leaves.

The brickwork gives the picture a steady rhythm, but it is not plain. Mortar chips, white patches and uneven red bricks break up the background behind the glossy leaves. Along the bottom, basil, thyme, rosemary and soft grey herbs form a low border above dark soil. The best landmarks are the pear shapes first, then the tied branches, leaf clusters and rough brick courses.
