Jack Russell on a Windy Beach

Wind lifts the coarse hair around this Jack Russell's ears, but the little dog has planted all four paws firmly in the sand. Its red ball is close enough for another game. Behind it, waves break across dark rocks while a striped windbreak shelters a corner of the beach. Paw prints cross the foreground among shells, pebbles and strands of seaweed.

White fur, white foam and the pale stripes of the windbreak could easily end up in the same sorting pile. Up close, each has a different edge, from loose whiskers to broken bubbles and the clean fold of a fabric panel. The brown patches around the dog's eyes give its face more definition than the mostly white chest. Thin rivulets reflect blue between sand ripples, and the ball's rough coating of grains places it firmly on the beach rather than in the water.
