Striped deck chairs on white sand, a row of painted beach huts, a dog chasing a ball along the waterline. These beach and seaside puzzles are the closest thing to a day at the coast you can get from your sofa. Play them free, from 4 pieces to 1000.

Sunny beaches and rocky shores

The collection splits into two moods. On the sunny side there are Beach Chairs by the Pier, Colorful Beach Huts and Jack Russell on a Windy Beach. On the wilder side, the black sand of Iceland, a granite shore at low tide and a set of rock pools full of starfish, hermit crabs and shells.

Is sand hard to do?

Harder than it looks. Sand is never one flat color: it has footprints, ripples, wet patches and small shadows, and those are what you match. The line of foam where the sea meets the beach is your friend, since it curves through the whole picture. Do the horizon early too. It is one straight line, and it splits the sky from the water.

Rock pools for patient players

The tide pool pictures are the slow, absorbing ones. Clear water sits over rocks, weed and sand, so most pieces show two layers at once: what is under the surface and the light on top of it. Build the creatures first, the orange starfish and the crabs in their shells, then the rim of the pool. The water inside goes last, matched by the shapes of the stones you can see through it.

Beach puzzles for kids

The beach huts and the Jack Russell are the easiest, with strong colors and one clear subject. With 24 or 36 pieces, a young child can find the red hut or the ball first. Rock pools are fun for older kids who like spotting things, since there is a crab or a starfish hiding in most corners.

How many pieces for a beach puzzle?

Sand and sky make a beach harder than its bright colors suggest. For a relaxed game, 104 pieces takes most people about 20 minutes and still leaves the chairs and huts big enough to spot. At 300 the sand becomes the real puzzle, and the rock pools are best saved for 600, when every shell and starfish gets a few pieces of its own.
