Machu Picchu in the Clouds

Dawn clouds drift around Machu Picchu, leaving the stone terraces sharp in some places and soft in others. Green slopes rise behind the old walls, with a narrow path cutting through blocks of grass and weathered stone. Low mist sits in the valley below, so the ruins feel high and quiet without losing their shape.

Terraces step down the slope in long green strips separated by stone walls. Nearer the buildings, smaller walls meet at sharper corners and enclose patches of grass. Mist passes behind the ruins and partly hides the mountains beyond. A pale fragment with a crisp stone edge belongs closer to the terraces than one with a soft cloud boundary. The darker mountain rises above both, with vegetation following its steep folds.
