Printmaking Press with Linocut Blocks

A hand press fills the middle of a bright print studio, its worn roller resting above a sheet of fresh paper. Carved blocks lie across the bench with leaves, hills and grasses cut into their dark surfaces. Ink rollers, wooden handles and curled shavings gather around the edges, while tall stacks of rough paper rise near the window.

Begin with the press frame and the broad pale sheet beneath it. After that, the blocks separate through their cut lines, raised ridges and uneven corners. Black ink gives the rollers a glossy patch, while dry wood and torn paper stay matte. Small curls from the carving bench add thin, irregular shapes between the larger tools.
