Blue and White Ceramic Rosettes

Blue and white ceramic tiles cover the frame in a patchwork of rosettes, diamonds and curling leaves. Each tile has a slightly different glaze, with some bright porcelain and others carrying hairline cracks and soft blue washes. Dark grout separates the squares, and a few corners show the uneven edges of handmade work.

Start with the large rosettes, then sort the tiles by the shape of their petals and the direction of their blue brushwork. The grout makes a useful grid, but it is not perfectly straight, so the worn edges matter too. Small chips, pale cracks and darker corners keep the repeated pattern from turning into one flat field.
