Coastal Village

A stone lane descends through a coastal village toward a wide blue bay. Terracotta roofs step down the hillside, while bright blue shutters, flower pots and trailing vines decorate the pale houses at the right. Olive branches frame the opposite side and soften the view into the water.

Follow the lane from the foreground to the small church near the center. Its paving stones change size with distance, providing a useful lesson in perspective. Roof tiles and rough walls have different textures even when they share the same warm color. The blue shutters are obvious anchors, followed by pink flowers and dark doorways. Keep the bay separate from the lighter sky by finding the mountain ridge across the horizon. Once the village is built, the broad water area has clear edges on every side.
