Golden Waffle in an Open Waffle Iron

The word waffle came into English from Dutch. It shares a root with the German Wabe, meaning honeycomb. One look at the grid of deep square pockets explains the name. A single square waffle sits in an open black iron on a granite counter, still steaming in the morning sun. Every square pocket in the waffle jigsaw puzzle has its own crisp brown rim. A little batter has run over the front lip, as it nearly always does.
