Monarchs in the Wildflowers

Every fall, monarchs from the eastern United States and Canada fly as far as 3,000 miles to spend the winter in the mountain forests of central Mexico. They fuel up along the way on late flowers like asters and goldenrod. Three of them feed in a late summer meadow, a monarch butterfly jigsaw puzzle full of orange wings. None of the butterflies that leave in the fall has made the trip before, yet they find the same forests their great-grandparents left.
