New Orleans Courtyard with Ironwork

An old courtyard closes around a brick path, with curling ironwork above the gate and tall shutters catching patches of shade. Ferns and palms fill the corners, while terracotta pots sit along the wall beneath a small balcony. Sunlight breaks through the leaves in scattered shapes rather than one even patch.

The iron gate gives the centre a strong collection of thin dark lines, so it helps to find its posts before sorting the foliage. Brick joints run in shorter horizontal bands and can anchor the left side. Group the broad green leaves by their highlights, then use the pale shutters and terracotta pots to finish the warmer sections. The shaded paving is easier once the courtyard edges are connected.
