Pastel Portrait of a Pear Orchard

Chalk catches on the paper grain, leaving tiny gaps inside the orchard's green canopy. Yellow pears hang from low branches above violet shadows, and a red ladder leans into the leaves. Broad strokes describe the grass, while shorter marks crowd around the fruit and twigs.

Color sorting helps here, but stroke direction often settles a doubtful join. A branch may continue through several pieces even when its brown line disappears beneath green pastel. Follow those interruptions instead of expecting an unbroken outline. The ladder offers a small area of regular geometry before you return to the looser marks that make up the rest of the painting.
