A night street lit by shop windows and a close view of tropical feathers can both feel vibrant, for quite different reasons. One sets bright light against deep shadow; the other puts saturated colors next to one another. This selection favors that strong visual contrast. It is less about having every color in the picture than about the way a few colors stand out.
Contrast does not need to fill the whole frame. A yellow boat can stand out against a dark harbor, or a few bright windows can give a street its focus. In a more crowded composition, neighboring colors compete for attention and the smaller lines between them become important.
