Pomegranate and Fig Still Life

Split pomegranates reveal ruby seeds above a folded linen cloth. Purple figs lie nearby, some cut open to show pale rims around their red centers. Loose seeds have fallen onto the dark wooden table between the fruit and green leaves. A blue-green pitcher and a small bowl stand behind them, with patches of light catching their glazed surfaces and the rounded skins of the whole fruit.

A cut fig has a single pale border around a fine-grained center; a pomegranate breaks into many small, glossy seeds divided by cream pith. These are different patterns even where the reds look alike. Whole fruit is smoother and darker than either cut surface. The folds of linen lead away from the fruit toward the table edge, providing broader shapes beside the tightly packed detail of the seeds.
