About the Tarred Timber Stave Church under a Gray Sky jigsaw puzzle
Stave churches take their name from the stav, the tall upright posts that carry the whole timber frame. Norway built them through the Middle Ages. The ones still standing owe a lot to tar. Pine tar is brushed over the walls and shingles every few years so the wood sheds rain instead of rotting, which is what turns them so dark. This one rises in tiers of shingle roof above a churchyard of mossy gravestones and birch trees. As a stave church jigsaw puzzle it is mostly weathered wood against a gray sky.
