About the Clapper Bridge of Granite Slabs across a Moor Stream jigsaw puzzle
A clapper bridge is about as simple as a bridge can get. Long granite slabs rest on piers of stacked stone, held in place by nothing but their own weight, which can run to several tons a slab. The design never changed much, so the old ones are hard to date, though some on the moors of southwest England are thought to be medieval. This one crosses a peaty brown stream on open moorland, with bracken turning rust on the slopes and a rocky hilltop above. It makes a clapper bridge jigsaw puzzle of lichen-spotted stone and fall color.
