Crested Porcupine on a Rocky Scrub Path

Despite the old stories, a porcupine can't shoot its quills. A crested porcupine warns attackers off by raising its crest and rattling the hollow quills on its tail. If that fails, it runs backward into them. Big cats that push their luck can end up with quills buried in their faces and paws.
