Dahlias and Beans in an Allotment

Rows of dahlias bring deep red, coral, peach and cream into the middle of the allotment, while climbing beans form a tall green wall behind them. A battered wheelbarrow rests beside the bed with gloves and a hand trowel, and a dark rain barrel anchors the far corner. Crates of vegetables, terracotta pots and a rough workbench fill the lower edge.

There is plenty to sort by texture here. Petals make small, irregular shapes, bean leaves overlap in layers, and the soil changes from loose black earth to pale paths between the beds. Start with the wheelbarrow and the bright flowers, then follow the canes upward. The watering can, twine and scattered tools give the quieter green areas useful little landmarks.
