Dahlias in a Galvanized Bucket

Crimson, coral and cream dahlias rise from a galvanized bucket on the potting bench. Their layered petals make dense rosettes above broad green leaves, while the metal catches narrow stripes of late light. Loose stems and a few unopened buds keep the lower arrangement from becoming one solid mass.

Start with the largest flower centres, where petal edges turn in repeated circles. Outer petals become longer and less regular as they reach the leaves. The bucket has a different kind of repetition, with vertical ribs and a dull highlight that moves around its curve. Keep those silver pieces apart from the pale petals until the bucket rim gives you a firm boundary.
