Fencing Masks on a Club Bench

Practice is over, and the masks have been set down with their mesh faces turned toward the room. Foils lie beside folded jackets and a pair of gloves on the wooden bench. Beyond the equipment, the piste runs away in long metallic strips against a plain wall.

Most of the kit is pale, so seams and shadows do more work than color. A curved guard belongs with a narrow blade; the larger dark curves belong to the masks. Mesh becomes denser where it turns away from the light. Keeping those edge pieces together helps distinguish the two masks before the bench beneath them is complete.
