Moss Garden with Stepping Stones

Flat stepping stones lead through a rain-fresh garden of moss, ferns and exposed roots. Velvety green cushions cover the rocks at different heights, while wet leaves rest in the dark soil between them. A mature tree anchors the right side, its bark broken into deep ridges and patches of moss. The path narrows towards a small pool and layered woodland beyond.

The stones give the picture a clear route, but each one has a different edge, sheen and arrangement of leaves. Moss shifts from yellow green in the open light to deep green beneath the tree. Ferns add fine repeating lines around the larger cushions. Start with the path, then use bark cracks, wet reflections and fallen leaves to separate the similar shades.
