Rose Arbor after Summer Rain

Pink roses crowd a weathered timber arch after a summer shower. Beads of water sit on the leaves, while loose petals mark the pale gravel path beneath it. Purple flowers, white sprays and clipped green shrubs fill both sides of the garden, giving the damp scene more than one shade of green to sort through.

Start with the arch posts and crosspieces, then follow the rose stems as they twist over the top. Some blooms open towards you; others turn away and show only curled petals. Small puddles mirror bits of sky along the path. Farther back, a low stone wall and soft hills make a quieter band behind all those close leaves.
