Wind-Bent Pines above a Cove

A pine grows almost sideways above the cove, its thick trunk twisting out of the rocky slope. Exposed roots grip the ground beside tufts of dry grass. Beyond the branches, the water changes from clear turquoise near the shore to dark blue farther out. A pale headland closes off the other side of the bay.

The trunk is the most distinctive part to assemble, especially where the bark curves around the bend. Pine needles make much smaller, darker marks than the grass below. Keep an eye on the far shoreline too. Its pale edge cuts through the blue and gives the water pieces somewhere to connect.
