Steam, trams or stations?

Where do you start on a train puzzle?

With the train. It is almost always the brightest thing in the picture, and its windows, wheels and doors line up in tidy rows. Next, follow the rails. They run toward one point in the distance, so the gap between them shrinks as you go, which tells you roughly where a piece sits. Leave the smoke and the sky for last. Steam is soft and grey, and it is where most of the time goes.

Tips for the tram pictures

Most of the trams here run through Lisbon, so the streets around them are full of patterned tiles, steep cobbles and balconies. Use the tram as your anchor, then follow the rails up the hill. The overhead wires are thin dark lines across the sky. They look like nothing on a single piece but join up quickly once you notice them. The painted tiles on the house fronts repeat, so match them by the color of the wall around them rather than the pattern itself.

Good train puzzles for kids

A single bold engine works best. The steam trains and the red tram are good at 24 or 36 pieces, because the train fills a big part of the picture and its color stands out at once. Around December, the Christmas Train Set around the Tree is a favorite for the same reason.

What size suits a train puzzle?

Around 150 pieces is a good first go for most of these. The train is still a few big pieces, and the street or hillside around it is busy enough to keep you interested. Go to 300 for the tram streets, where every balcony and tile adds something to find.

For rail fans who want a challenge

Try the railway hall at 600 pieces. The iron lattice of the roof repeats across the whole top half, and every pane of glass catches the light a little differently. The poster wall in the wooden station is another slow one, full of small blocks of faded color.

The autumn steam train also appears on the autumn puzzles page, and for more travel scenes, the Travel category has old towns, harbors and mountain roads.
