Mountain Goats on a Rocky Pass

Three white mountain goats cross the rocky pass at different heights, with the largest adult leading along the ridge. Short curved horns, dark hooves and shaggy coats give each animal a clear outline. Narrow snow patches sit between the rocks, and a blue lake and jagged peaks open behind them.

Begin with the goats, sorting the fur by shadow and direction rather than by white alone. The foreground rocks carry lichen, cracks and warm brown flecks, which help break up the grey slopes. Snow and sky form larger calm areas, while alpine plants, distant ridges and the lake supply the finer pieces around the animals.
