Snow changes an ordinary view by softening edges and making every small trace stand out. Footprints, branches, rooflines and patches of dry grass become valuable clues against the pale ground. What first looks like a broad white section soon separates into reflected light, cool shade and textured snow.

Sort pale pieces by what touches them rather than by white alone. A strip of brick, bark, feather or rock often gives away the position faster than a subtle change in tone. Smooth drifts belong apart from tracked paths and wind-shaped surfaces, while the coolest grays usually sit close to buildings, trees or deep folds in the ground.
