Peonies in a Blue Vase

Fresh peonies crowd a deep blue ceramic vase beside a sunny window. Some flowers are fully open, revealing cream centers among layers of pink and white petals, while tighter buds rise above the arrangement. Broad green leaves reach into the light. Lace curtains, an old wooden table, fallen petals and folded linen keep the background gentle but far from empty.

Some peonies show their yellow centers; others are still folded into tight pink cups. Each bloom has a different outline, despite the similar petal colors. The vase brings a much deeper blue into the lower part of the picture, with curved highlights across its glossy surface. Lace and window frames occupy the palest areas behind the flowers. Their straight lines and fine pattern are distinct from the rounded folds of a petal.
