Woodpecker on a Fallen Trunk

On a great spotted woodpecker, the small red patch at the back of the head marks an adult male. Females have a plain black crown, while young birds wear red on top of the head instead. This male clings to a fallen birch covered in moss and little bracket fungi, his stiff tail braced against the bark. Wet brown leaves on the woodland floor set off a crisp great spotted woodpecker jigsaw puzzle.
