What makes a picture easy
Not plainness. An easy picture is one you can read at a glance: the subject is recognizable on almost every piece, and the background breaks into a few clear regions instead of one big field of the same color. Curious Kitty is the textbook case: fur, window, books, leaves, each its own little group. Red Tulips in a Ceramic Vase is red on white and could hardly be clearer. A sunset over a calm lake looks simple and is not, because half the pieces are the same orange.
Easy at any count
At 4 to 12 pieces a face or a flower stays almost whole on one piece. At 24 the outline breaks into real clues. At 50 you are sorting a little before you place anything. All of these pictures play at every count, so a child can do Chicks Nestled in Straw at 8 and an adult can do the same picture at 104 without it becoming a different kind of puzzle.
Where to start on the board
Find the subject first, even if you usually begin with corners. Eyes, wheels, a flower center and a strong straight line are easier to spot than a plain edge cut from grass or sky. Once that part is together, work outward into the background. The Snowy Owl in Flight is a nice example: the wings stretch across most of the picture and the dark tree line separates sky from snow, so there are two natural places to begin.
A bigger step when you want one
Take the same picture up to 50 before you choose a busier scene. You keep the clues that made it comfortable and learn the board at the same time. Most people find 104 of an easy picture more relaxing than 50 of a hard one, so the count is the gentler dial to turn. The beginner puzzles walk through that first week in order and the large-piece puzzles are for when the pieces themselves need to be bigger.
