Hoarfrost on a Mossy Limestone Run

Water still runs between the limestone shelves, although frost has coated nearly everything above it. White needles fringe the moss and gather along the veins of fallen beech leaves. The stream stays dark, reflecting only small strips of sky between the pale rock steps.

It is tempting to put all the white pieces together, but their textures differ. Frost on moss forms a fuzzy fringe; crystals on flat stone follow cracks and pits. Dark water pieces often carry a smooth highlight along one edge. Those boundaries are useful for connecting the rock sections without losing the winding course of the stream between them.
