Vermilion Brushwork on Linen

Vermilion paint crosses the linen in thick strokes, thin dry-brush marks and small scattered drops. The red bands overlap around the center, leaving narrow strips of woven cloth between them. Charcoal marks anchor the upper middle and lower right, while the linen folds make the warm background change from cream to brown.

Use the black brushwork and the cloth's visible weave to divide the picture into sections. The red paint is full of useful differences, from glossy ridges to rough edges where the brush ran nearly dry. Look for the direction of each stroke before relying on color alone. The small flecks and pale gaps add enough quiet detail to make the final pieces satisfying.
