Abstract puzzles set familiar objects aside and let color, shape and texture do the work. Blocks of paint may meet along a crisp edge or drift into one another through softer marks. Without a face, building or horizon to guide the eye, the picture gradually explains its own visual rules as it comes together.

A repeated stripe can widen into a wave, and a narrow color band can disappear beneath another. Some images suggest folded paper or poured paint; others leave the material uncertain. The relationships between neighboring shapes become the subject of the picture.
