Sunlit Ochre and Cobalt Shapes

Ochre paper covers the left side of the picture in broad torn layers, with a dried stem casting a fine shadow across the surface. Cobalt paint blocks cut through the middle and lower edge, each one showing a different brush texture. Cream paper, a shallow dish and a rough stone keep the pale sections from becoming one flat area.

The torn edges are useful landmarks, especially where the ochre sheet lifts above the blue paint. Sort the deep cobalt pieces by their brush marks, then use the clean cream shapes to connect the larger sections. The small seed heads and the stone add delicate details to an image built from strong, satisfying blocks of color.
