Bog Cotton Tufts across a Blanket Bog under Low Cloud

Bog cotton is neither cotton nor quite a grass. It's a sedge. The white tufts that open in early summer are its seed heads, built to catch the wind. Thousands of them nod across a blanket bog here, among dark peat pools and moss in green and rust, with cloud resting on the hills. Hill walkers learn to read them as a warning, since they grow where the ground is wettest. The bog cotton jigsaw puzzle is mostly soft greens and grays.
